Darwin to Kakadu Day Tour planning – it all kicked off with an idea for me, back when I was still chasing the urge to roam after years of leading tours in the NT with guided groups – before ultimately deciding to go it alone and founding Get Lost Travel.


I’ve probably put up some serious miles on the Outback route, and it’s easy to get misled when you first depart the city – that first hour is a smooth run, sun climbing fast, and the region already flexing its muscles.

I won’t lie, I quickly realised this wasn’t just a simple trip – this is the real deal – a complete experience into Country and all the tropical climate & ancient landscapes that will confuse navigation.

It’s the visitors heading to Kakadu that are usually after finding something different to chase waterfalls, get up close with local wildlife, or experience some of the ancient Aboriginal art.

But the real highlight is in the way the whole day is just one continuous flow – you move away from the sea and trade them for the gnarled branches of some of the Territory’s paperbark swamps, crocodile-filled lagoons, and the kind of monsoon forest that’ll drown out your thoughts.


I’ve travelled this land many times with all sorts of groups, and without fail the same lesson always comes home – pack smart, start early, and above all don’t get careless about how fast the temperature can swing out here.
